SHANNON CHAN

As most of our group members have had some previous dance experience, we decided to make a dance cover. While we found learning the choreography relatively simple, many other steps proved somewhat challenging. Participating in the process of creating the video gave me insight on why the Korean popular music industry agencies are strict with their schedules and idols. Idols who are working to debut, or have just debuted, usually live in a dorm together, and most of their time is committed to the company’s demands. However, as every member of our group has their own schedules, it was quite difficult to find a time where everybody was available to meet up. Many companies spend full days filming for music videos, but we could only allocate a couple of hours to film the cover. I realized that younger idols with many comebacks scheduled have to live together so they are discouraged from making their own plans and potentially forcing an already confirmed schedule to be changed.

Another aspect I became more knowledgeable on is the pressure that idols must deal with when performing. When learning the choreography and moving onto rehearsing the dance, it was fine to mess up a little bit because we could just restart the song and go over it again. It was more anxious for me when we started dancing in front of the camera. I felt as though if I messed up a step, everything would have to be set up again. Idols film on a much larger set and in front of more employees, so I would imagine the anxiousness that I felt would be much worse for idols, let alone when they perform on stage live.
