Although I love dancing K-pop covers, I had never gotten a chance to deeply look into their styles, efforts, and techniques when it came to produce a satisfying music video until this project. First, I realized the importance of managing the time and schedules to film. Practicing the dance, finding places to shoot, and choosing the styling were the three significant segments to break down. Everyone participated in various ways by giving ideas to improve taking shots during the film or providing opportunities to try out for new things which made our teamwork powerful. Above all, encouraging each other to bring up more energy and taking care of one another to enhance our collaboration became the essential element throughout this process of creating a dance cover video.
Discovering the hierarchy between Block B members recalled my thoughts on the controversies on the differentiation between the members. Especially, regarding the parts in music videos or cover dances, it was commonly noticeable who had the most screen time because of how that person is more famous than the other team members. Block B was not an exception. When I first looked at their song, “Yesterday,” it was apparent that Zico and P.O had the most parts. Even though I only recognized the most well-known Block B members as well, it was shocking how much the other members in the team also contributed the same amount but was still forgotten. Regarding this in mind, my group distributed equal amounts of parts to make sure everyone got a chance to each have a solo scene in the film.
Lastly, when filming, I realized the importance of including facial expressions or gestures. I had to choreograph even the smallest of movements through many practices. Acting in front of the camera while dancing might not have been the easiest, but I learned that communicating with fans or the audience was crucial. As a dancer, I should know how to act in a certain way to emotionally deliver the theme of the song more explicitly. To conclude, there were many reasons why this project was an engaging experience to me, but everyone in my team being positive, helpful, and open to each other especially changed myself to be more extroverted.
