There are three main things that I learned from the process of covering. The first is the impact cover videos can make to the Korean Pop Culture industry. When a group recreates a song or dance, they are getting their friend group to be involved in the economy of the industry. A cover acts similarly as an advertisement for the artist. By recreating the music or dance they are adding their own personal persona towards the artwork. Furthermore, due to the trust, the person built in his or her community one is able to project and penetrate the group of population normal advertisement would not effect. Second, I find it really interesting is the prevalence of “cuteness” in Korean Pop Culture. From the accessories in music videos to the way, artists act in front of audiences, the presence of “cuteness” is embraced instead of rejected like western pop culture. Lastly, I discovered the power of fandom. The group we got assigned to was Block B and when we were looking up the live performances they did for the song yesterday, there was little result. This indicates that they only performed the dance a few time due to the cut short of their promotion period. It really breaks my heart to see that because they have put in so much effort for this grand comeback to later find out their song was not popular. The fans have much control of the artist’s actions and I believe that this relationship is super unhealthy.
On a personal level, I learned the importance of leaving negative energy behind when working on a team project. I am very fortunate to have an amazing team. Whenever we met up, whether it was in person or online, everyone contributed positively to the group. It was because of this we were able to have an amazing time working together and that resulted in us to work on the project with passion.
