After covering Block B’s Yesterday, the lessons I’ve learned from the past were reaffirmed. These lessons I learned from the past are the following: Being directly involved in a community broadens social horizons, interacting indirectly with the idol or idol groups via song or dance cover increases affinity with the idol or idol group, and prolonged exposure to the same song via singing or dance  cover has a positive correlation to disliking the song in the future.

The first lesson is somewhat self-explanatory in the sense where the more you work with other people, the more likely you are to become close to each other and develop good social relationships. This sense of community and good relations is also evident within fandoms who enjoy many similar elements (preferred groups, idol biases, etc…). Our group barely knew each other at the beginning, but working through the class project brought us closer.

The second lesson is evident through our group’s new-found enjoyment of Block B, despite Block B practically being disbanded at this point. I believe that the more one covers songs (singing, dancing, or otherwise), the more they will learn to like the idol or idol group than if they just listened to the song. I would like to argue that active engagement increases affinity more because one has to participate in empathy to perform the cover well.

I also believe that the opposite is possible, where the more one is exposed to the same song they cover the more likely they will grow to dislike the song by the end of the cover. Having done dance covers in the past, my other friends and I have expressed our distaste with certain songs after finishing our dance covers. Unfortunately, the pattern continues to persist, as I now have the urge of deleting Yesterday from my phone after completing our dance cover.

I enjoyed creating a cover, and hope to do more in the future.
